copyright: © Pendant et même immédiatement après la Guerre Civile, très peu d'artistes américains ont entrepris des représentations directes du conflit catastrophique ou de l'expérience des Afro-Américains réduits en esclavage dont il a décidé le sort. Une des exceptions les plus remarquables est ce tableau du célèbre peintre de la scène du milieu du siècle, Eastman Johnson, qui prétend avoir basé le sujet sur un événement réel qu'il avait vu près du champ de bataille de Manassas, Virginie, le 2 mars 1862, quelques jours avant la forteresse confédérée a été cédée aux forces de l'Union. Dans cette composition puissamment simplifiée, une famille d'esclaves fugitifs charge la sécurité des lignes de l'Union dans la lumière terne de l'aube. L'absence de figures blanches dans ce sujet de libération le rend virtuellement unique dans l'art américain de l'époque - ces Afro-Américains sont les agents indépendants de leur propre liberté.
