Whistler était persuadé que l'art devrait se concentrer sur l'harmonie des couleurs, ce qui lui valut beaucoup de critiques. il a été vu alors comme un précurseur de l'art abstrait. Il aimait l'harmonie des formes et de couleur et souhaitait créer un art basé sur des lois précises de composition où le dessin est maitrisé. il disait: "l'Art est la science du Beau".
James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) est un peintre américain, lié au mouvement symbolique et impressionniste.
Whistler a été mondialement reconnu de son vivant.
Il sera considéré comme l'initiateur de l'impressionnisme anglais. Il considérait la peinture comme une pure expérience esthétique au-delà des valeurs de la représentation et se rapprochera de la culture symboliste des années 1880-1890. Ses contemporains compareront ses nocturnes et ses symphonies aux variations subtiles de la musique de Wagner.
La maison dans laquelle il est né est devenue le Musée Whistler.
