copyright: © Hugo Van der Goes (1440-1482) est un peintre flamand des Pays-Bas bourguignons. Les premières informations certaines sur le peintre le situent en 1468 à Bruges, où il collabore à la décoration des fêtes en l'honneur des noces du duc de Bourgogne Charles le Téméraire. Entre 1476 et 1477, il exécute pour Tommaso Portinari, représentant des Médicis à Bruges, son œuvre la plus importante : le triptyque Portinari (Florence, Offices), dont les grandes dimensions sont tout à fait insolites pour la peinture de l'époque. En 1477, frappé par une maladie mentale, l'artiste se retire comme frère convers à l'Abbaye du Rouge-Cloître près de Bruxelles, mais n'interrompt pas complètement son activité. C'est en effet de cette période que date la Mort de la Vierge (Bruges, Groeningen Museum), où transparaît une tension dramatique plus aiguë, traduite par l'irréfrénable animation expressive des personnages. @goes - Portrait of a Man. 1475. copyright: © Parmi tous les primitifs flamands, Hugo van der Goes est le seul à prendre une épaisseur humaine, le seul qui semble avoir été autre chose qu’un brave artisan respectueux de la tradition médiévale. Souvent on l’a même assimilé au “génie” de la Renaissance, tourmenté par l’influence néfaste de Saturne, planant loin au-dessus du commun des mortels mais toujours prêt à sombrer dans la folie. Le style très personnel de Van der Goes apporta une nouvelle vigueur à l’art flamand au moment où de nombreux épigones de Rogier van der Weyden transformaient en formules aisées l’art élégant de cet artiste.
