    Vittore Carpaccio (vers 1465 - vers 1525-26) de son vrai nom Scarpazza a été l'élève puis le collaborateur de Gentile Bellini. Dans ses débuts, il peint d'une manière objective et narrative rappelant les tapisseries flamandes. Il se rendra à Rome mais résidera à Venise. Par sa maîtrise dans l'organisation de la perspective, Carpaccio assouplit et précise à la fois la leçon d'Antonello. Les fuites d'architectures, les vues obliques adoptées comme pour permettre des jeux plus savants d'arcatures, des rythmes plus inattendus de marbres colorés et de trous d'ombre, dénotent une science si ferme, alliée à un sentiment vif de la clarté spatiale. La connaissance de la peinture ferraraise enfin n'est certainement pas étrangère à cette acuité de vision qui permet à Carpaccio d'évoquer, à partir de la réalité formelle et des valeurs colorées, un univers irréel et magique. L'artiste rencontrera le Pérugin, appelé à Venise pour peindre la vie de Saint Jean. Il réalisera le cycle de la scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni.
