John White ALEXANDER commença sa carrière en 1875 comme illustrateur au Harper's Weekly avant de partir pour l'Europe (1877), où il fut l'un des " Duveneck boys ", étudiant avec le maître à Munich et Polling puis en Italie. Il se lia avec Whistler, dont l'influence sur son style est manifeste. C'est alors en effet qu'Alexander évolue d'une matière épaisse, empâtée, vers une touche plus fine et une couleur plus étale. De retour aux États-Unis en 1881, il continua à travailler pour le Harper's, et devint parallèlement un portraitiste renommé (série des contemporains célèbres pour le Century Magazine, 1886 ; Walt Whitman, 1886-1899, New York, Metropolitan Museum). Il habita Paris de 1890 à 1901, fréquentant Rodin, H. James, O. Wilde ou Mirbeau, et y fut en contact avec le Symbolisme et l'Art nouveau (Isabelle et le pot de basilic, 1897, Boston, M. F. A.). Alexander revint s'établir à New York en 1901, où il jouit d'une réputation considérable, due en partie aux peintures murales exécutées à la bibliothèque du Congrès de Washington (1895-96) et au Carnegie Institute de Pittsburgh (1905-1915). Élu à la N. A. Orphaned in infancy, he was reared by his grandparents and, at the age of 12, became a telegraph boy in Pittsburgh. Edward J. Allen became an early supporter and patron of John W. Alexander, adopting the orphaned Alexander while he worked at the Pacific and Atlantic Telegraph Co. as a young man. Allen brought Alexander to the Allen home at "Edgehill" where Alexander painted various members of the Allen family, including Colonel Allen.
